ABOUT
Hello! My name is Ler Hser and I am currently a student at Sanderson High School, enrolled in the Sculpture I Course.
Before taking this class, I had a moderate experience of visual art and very little exposure to the art of sculpture making. Like many students, I took an art elective in elementary school, and if my memory serves me correct I've taken one since the second grade. The last art elective I took was in the seventh grade. I have come to acknowledge that each art elective was quite similar because much of the material that was taught was often repetitive; colors, their purposes, and their color schemes have been embossed into my brain.
Sculpture I opens up a door of knowledge regarding sculptures and ceramics. In this course, I have learned that a sculpture can serve many purposes. A sculpture can be created simply for aesthetic purposes (non-functional pieces) or it can be made with intentions to be used in everyday settings (functional pieces); for example a bowl and a cup are made to be eaten and drunken out of, whereas a small pot may simply serve as decoration. Throughout this course I have learned to incorporate elements and principles of design in as many ways possible on the projects I've been assigned. Concerning ceramics, I've learned to create texture, consistent slab thickness, and how to score and slip in order to attach pieces together. The wheel has been my favorite experience in this class; working on the wheel has taught me to be patient, to practice (a lot), and to rid myself of the idea of perfection. Some technical skills I learned on the wheel were how to center, enter, and choking (pulling up of clay). I have enjoyed the challenges and creativity of this class, it has taught me so much in regards to sculpture! I hope to enroll in the Sculpture II course in the near future, and I will take all the skills and techniques I've learned in this class and apply it to the next.
